    We will be holding a two-hour Excel workshop this upcoming Thursday, Feb.2nd, in MS6627. It will be a two-part program with the first part from 6:00-7:00PM. At this workshop, we will cover the basic Excel functions such as IF statements, VLOOKUP, and pivot tables. The second part of this program will take place from 7:00-8:00PM. This program will be a more in depth look with information on VBA and creating macros.

    Excel skills are very important in the actuarial field, so don't miss out on this awesome opportunity!

    What is Access/SQL?
    Microsoft Access is a Microsoft Office application for database management. Users can process large quantities of data, as well as create forms and reports. Actuaries are increasingly using Access to store data on their policyholders and on claims. SQL is Structured Query Language, a language used to communicate with databases and query information.

    CSAA will be holding another information session next Tuesday, Jan. 24th, in MS6627, at 6PM. This is a terrific opportunity for you to come out and connect with the firm representatives since CSAA is currently looking for candidates for the upcoming summer. Also, chick-fil-a will be served. If you would like to, please feel free to bring a couple copies of your resume as well.
    Congratulations to all the teams that participated in the case competition! You all have done a terrific job! Even if you did not make it to the final round, we hope that this experience was valuable in working together as a team, practicing both analytical and communication skills, and providing a glimpse as to what an actuary really does.

    We would like to invite all the teams and members to come and spectate the final round tomorrow evening (Jan 19th), starting at 6PM, which will also include a team from UC Santa Barbara. You will get the opportunity to network with the firm representatives as well as the students from UCSB at the end of the event.

    Welcome back to the new year!
    To start off the winter quarter, we are happy to announce our upcoming Fifth Annual UCLA Actuarial Case Competition, which was generously provided by Molina Healthcare. This is one of the best chances to learn more about the actuarial career and practice professional skills. In addition, the outstanding teams will have the opportunity to present in front of various firm professionals, which will be a big plus for recruiting.

    The following are the rules:
    1. BAS Paid Member - You can access here to pay online if you have not paid yet, or you can pay in cash at the kickoff meeting
    2. Each team will have four members, and at least two of the members must be underclassmen.
    3. Only one of the team members is required to attend the kick-off meeting, which will be on January 10th at 6:00 PM in MS 6627.

    The kick-off meeting will give an introduction presentation about our case competition, offer insight from past BAS Case Competition winners, and allow you to officially form and sign up the team for the competition.

    We hope everyone is enjoying the quarter and getting ready for thanksgiving. This week we will be jointly hosting a "Mathsgiving" Potluck Social with UMSA in MS3974 at 6:00pm this Thursday.

    This is a great opportunity to talk to other members of BAS and UMSA while getting free food! We will be providing Chinese and Thai food as the entrees and are asking that you please bring drinks and desserts to join the potluck.

    The fourth installment of the Bruin Actuarial Society's Professional Workshops will take place on Thursday, November 3rd in MS 5127 at 6:00 pm. This workshop will cover how to communicate ideas and work within a team, both very important skills for the actuarial career!     BAS will host the third installment of our Professional Workshops series on Thursday, October 27th with our Interview Workshop. The workshop will be from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in MS 5127. We will be covering topics that include:

    • Types of interviews (Phone, Webcam, In-person, and On-site) and how each one is different
    • Preparing for an interview: what and how to research
    • Types of interview questions and how to approach them

    We will be having our annual Mentorship Mixer next Tuesday, October 11th at 6:00 PM in MS 6221. This year, each officer and experienced senior will be taking 5-6 students as our mentees.

    If you are interested in becoming a mentee, this is a great chance for you to connect with the officers and experienced seniors, and also learn more about the actuarial field.     This workshop is specifically geared towards helping freshmen and international students get started with their actuarial careers and will take place on Thursday, October 6th in MS 6627. The freshman portion of this workshop will be from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and the international student portion from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. If you are a freshman international student, please feel free to stay for both. Food will be provided!

    Finished those resumes you've been working on? We are now collecting resumes for a Resume Book to present to the firms as the Ninth Annual BAS Career Fair approaches! This Resume Book will allow recruiters to review the resumes of students who are actively looking for internships and/or full-time opportunities.

    As some of you already know, during spring quarter, BAS began a new series of posts called "Faces of an Actuary" on the BAS Facebook page. Our goal has been to feature different actuaries (both aspiring and current) who are able to provide some insight into their experiences and perspectives on their respective fields and backgrounds.

    Currently, we are reaching out to all of you to collect YOUR stories! Selected ones will be featured in a "Faces of an Actuary" Facebook post this upcoming fall quarter. Each featured post will consist of a picture and caption/short paragraph.

    In preparation for Career Fair (Oct 3, 2016) and fall recruitment, BAS will hold our annual Virtual Resume Critique over the next few weeks. Members can now submit your resumes and have it read and critiqued by an officer.

    If you wish to participate, please email with subject line "Virtual Resume Critique" and your resume attached, in Word Document format by Friday, September 2nd. Your resume will be reviewed by an officer of the club and returned to you with comments.

    In order for our critique to be of maximum help, please ensure that your resume is free of spelling and grammatical errors and that it does not exceed one page.
