Catalog Description 272D. Rotating Fluids and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. Lecture, three hours. Effects of Coriolis forces on fluid behavior. Inviscid flows, Taylor/Proudman theorem, Taylor columns, motions of bodies, inertial waves in spheres and spherical shells, Rossby waves. Ekman layers, spin-up. Shallow-water theory, wind-driven ocean circulation. Effects of stratification, Benard convection. Baroclinic instability, Eady model. S/U or letter grading.
