Handouts
As we will be following the
textbook rather closely, I will not provide notes for every lecture. However, I may supplement particularly
detailed lectures with additional notes, supplied here.
Information on
exams
- The midterm will be on
Wednesday, Feb 11, in the usual time and place. There will be five questions (covering Chapters 2-3 of
the textbook, i.e. up to the Feb 4 lecture), of a nature similar to that
of the homework (but shorter).
There is no practice final (this is the first class ever for Math
133); instead, I recommend you review the homework problems, including the
optional ones. You may use
your textbook, and one additional A4 page of notes to the exam. (While you could of course use the
white space of your textbook to add more notes, it is unlikely that this
will be significantly more advantageous for you than preparing a
well-organized and handy reference sheet on a single A4 piece of
paper. Also, the very act of
preparing this reference sheet will help you revise the material for the
midterm). Calculators will
not be allowed (while there will be some computations, they generally
involve manipulating single-digit numbers). Midterm solutions are available here.
- The final will be on Wednesday,
March 24, 3pm-6pm, in the usual room. There will be nine questions (focusing primarily on
material after the midterm), of a nature similar in level to that of the homework
and midterms. Again, you may use
your textbook and one additional A4 sheet of paper. The following topics will not be
covered: Gibbs phenomenon, Laplace equation, ODE, and distributions.
